Natural Skincare Might Not Be So Natural…

October 08, 2017

Back in the days when I was an insecure teenager, I would try every skincare product under the sun to see if anything would clear my spots.

This ranged from Pro-Activ to Clinique to Wilkinsons; the list goes on.

However, a friend said the reason my blemishes were not clearing was due to using synthetic skincare.

So, being my naive self I bought a whole collection of tea tree skincare from a brand that promotes itself on being "100% natural".

Excited to see what would happen I eagerly slathered on the products before I went to bed and couldn't wait to see what I looked like the next morning.

Would I look like Candice Swanepoel with radiant skin? Or have Constance Jablonski flawless face?

Nope, I actually looked worse than the day before.

Why? Because I had an allergic reaction to one of their 'natural ingredients'.

You see, a couple of months ago I had reacted badly to a perfume after spraying it on my neck. The allergy left me with rashes and spots that were extremely irritating. So, when my face was showing the same effects as my neck did, I knew straight away what had happened.

To cut a long story short, I am allergic to the chemical; Alpha Isomethyl Ionone, a fragrance ingredient.

This chemical is actually in a lot of perfume, aftershave, moisturizer and other skin care including Paco Rabanne's Lady Million.

However, as reported by Cosmetic.Info Alpha Isomethyl Ionone is a synthetic ingredient meaning it was artificially produced.

Thus, the 'natural skincare' I had invested in was actually the opposite.
To the point where Ebearthborn said that Alpha Isomethyl Ionone is considered a possible human immune system toxin and is also toxic to the environment.

Similarly, Paula's Choice gave the chemical a rating of "Poor" saying it should be avoided by those who suffer from sensitive skin.

To say I was disappointed was an understatement, rather than clearing my skin, the products had actually made it worse. Also, being an age where self-confidence was at an all-time low, what was supposed to be a saviour turned out to be my nightmare.
